St. Maarten Consumer Protection

Philipsburg, St. Maarten: Merchants in St. Maarten have always been among the most honest, respectable and service conscious in the entire region but yet another step is being taken to insure this with the preparation of a Consumer Protection Act being undertaken by the Chamber of Commerce working with the Harbor Group of Companies.

The act, designed to further preserve and protect the reputation of St. Maarten as a shopping destination, will not only benefit our visitors but locals as well and is expected to be submitted to Government by February of next year.

This by no means is a statement that rules and regulations do not already exist and that the overwhelming majority of businesses do not observe them. They do but the furthering and enforcement of these rules can only be welcome to consumers and who of us isn't one and who hasn't experienced that odd problem here and there?

Chamber President, Ludwig Quenniche, states that "at the end of the day it is the common interest of the shopping climate of the island that counts… (and)…it has come to a point where some discipline must be put in place."

Well, Ludwig, we agree. Measures of this type can only help and Consumers both foreign and local alike deserve all the protection Government can offer.
